00:37
hey guys thanks for tuning into
00:38
happiness abound the podcast episode 2
00:44
thanks so much for tuning in I really
00:46
appreciate it and I'm really excited to
00:47
share with you the idea of something
00:50
that's actually been ruminating in my
00:51
mind for the last couple months actually
00:53
and that's the idea of flow so
00:56
everybody's heard about flow and that
00:59
it's when you find flow it's supposed to
01:00
bring you happiness blah blah blah
01:02
I've actually had a really hard time
01:05
with that and here's why so I have a
01:08
full-time job I also have a couple of
01:10
freelance gigs that I do I'm married I
01:13
have two dogs and I'm involved in a lot
01:15
of things one of which being volleyball
01:18
so I played doubles grass volleyball
01:20
with one of my oldest and best friends
01:22
in the Utah outdoor volleyball
01:24
association or uova for short and we've
01:27
been playing for about two years and we
01:29
play a tournament maybe once a month in
01:31
the summer it just depends on our
01:32
schedules she's a mother of two and I'm
01:35
busy with things as well so when we can
01:36
get together and play we do so for two
01:39
years we have been playing volleyball
01:40
and in our little beginner division and
01:43
this last weekend was the last
01:45
tournament we were gonna be able to
01:46
participate in for this year and we
01:49
actually took first in our division
01:50
which means that we move up and it's
01:52
pretty awesome we're really excited to
01:53
be set out and said hey we want to take
01:55
first today and we did so it was
01:57
fantastic but prior to even last weekend
02:00
I've really been thinking about how I
02:04
feel when I play volleyball and I know
02:05
this is totally weird and random but
02:08
I've realized that you know I said that
02:11
I have a job and freelance and and I'm
02:13
married and all of these things and
02:15
friends and family and etc etc the
02:18
pressures of real life that I think we
02:20
all have but when I play volleyball I
02:22
don't think about that stuff
02:24
it is literally six hours of hanging out
02:27
with one of my best friends playing some
02:30
good volleyball and focusing on doing
02:32
the best that I can that I can whether
02:36
that's getting a good hit make sure to
02:38
dig some you know dig a ball up or just
02:40
whatever it is but I'm not focusing on
02:44
anything else but volleyball and I think
02:47
that is becoming so rare maybe not maybe
02:50
it's just
02:51
rare for me but I tend to multitask and
02:53
think about a lot of different things at
02:55
the same time and so it's awesome to set
02:58
aside six hours to do something that I
03:00
really enjoy that we're pretty good at
03:03
together right she's an amazing partner
03:05
we're really well fitted for playing
03:07
volleyball with each other and it helps
03:08
that we've been best friends for over 20
03:10
years but it's awesome just to get to
03:13
spend time with my friend and to sit
03:15
down well I guess not sit down get up
03:17
and play some volleyball for such an
03:19
extended period of time
03:20
and to not think or worry about anything
03:22
else and I'm realizing that that's a
03:26
state of flow and I feel truly honored
03:28
and blessed that I'm able to have that
03:30
state of flow on a pretty regular basis
03:33
at least during the summer and the
03:35
reason I bring all this up is because I
03:36
feel like there's not this I mean I'm
03:39
almost 30 and it's only in the last year
03:42
that I've realized playing volleyball is
03:44
one of those things that really gets me
03:45
in a state of flow where I can just
03:47
focused solely on something else it's a
03:49
huge stress relief too and I always feel
03:52
great afterward and it's just awesome
03:54
it's good all the way around and it's
03:56
something that's amazing for me to do
03:58
personally so I wanted to share that
04:00
with you because I feel like we're in a
04:02
space a lot of us anyways I know I was
04:05
and and what I don't have volleyball of
04:06
wondering how I can get into that state
04:10
and really focus on something else
04:12
without worrying about in my case what
04:15
the dogs are doing or meal plans or
04:19
clients at work or clients in the
04:22
freelance side and the latest blog post
04:24
that needs to come up on happiness
04:25
abound and how my friend is doing when
04:28
she's planning her wedding and and all
04:29
of these individual pieces all going on
04:32
at the same time and so it's really nice
04:33
to set aside that time to go and play
04:36
volleyball and I don't think a lot of us
04:38
have that so what I wanted to do is talk
04:39
about how we can create flow time
04:42
because I think not only do we have all
04:44
these different things going around in
04:46
our heads and we're trying to focus on
04:47
all of them at once and remember the
04:48
grocery list and make sure to do the
04:50
laundry and all these other pieces but
04:53
we also are inundated with very full
04:58
schedules so how can you set aside time
05:00
to experience flow and it's kind of a
05:03
piece of that
05:04
self-love element where how do you set
05:06
aside time to experience flow where it
05:08
may be something just for you and not
05:11
involve your family so here's what I've
05:15
done is I've set aside time and the way
05:18
I've been able to do that is I just
05:19
schedule out ahead of time and in this
05:22
case with volleyball it's only once a
05:24
month right and sometimes we play on
05:26
Sundays just together for fun and we
05:28
play against our husbands and that's
05:30
like an hour on Sundays but for the most
05:33
part it's one six hour tournament one
05:36
Saturday a month and that's the time
05:39
that I've set aside and that my friend
05:40
has set aside for us to go and play
05:42
volleyball and I think it's a good
05:45
outlet for her too but I won't speak on
05:46
her behalf but it's something that we
05:49
planned for we look forward to our
05:50
families know that it has become a
05:52
priority and they totally respect and
05:55
her husband even comes and watches with
05:57
her two girls and my husband takes says
05:59
yeah take the card do whatever you need
06:01
to do and we really get a chance to find
06:04
our flow States and so how do you create
06:07
that time you've got to set aside
06:08
something even if it's just an hour a
06:10
month something and some time where you
06:14
can focus on you and I think that you'll
06:16
find you're able to find time and do a
06:18
lot more
06:19
after you've set aside that one hour per
06:21
month and one hour per month is really
06:24
not that much I'm pretty sure that I
06:26
spend an hour per month if not more on
06:29
Facebook so and Facebook can't be your
06:33
state of flow just for what it's worth
06:35
the has to be some of you doing
06:36
something for you not focusing on other
06:39
people so that's what I'd recommend for
06:42
setting aside time but I also want to
06:45
talk about how yeah it's a form of
06:47
stress release relief and self-love so
06:50
it's not selfish to set aside that time
06:52
even if it is just an hour or maybe it's
06:55
six hours a month or maybe you have
06:58
something that you do every Tuesday I
07:01
don't know but whatever that thing for
07:04
you is make sure you set aside some time
07:05
because it does make you a happier
07:08
person to be around a lot less stress in
07:11
your life and something to look forward
07:13
to on a regular basis that you've
07:15
thoroughly enjoy
07:17
so I think two I should mention that you
07:21
can have these flow activities with
07:23
other people obviously I have one with
07:25
my best friend and we go when we play
07:28
volleyball but I also have flow
07:30
activities that I do just for me and
07:33
some cases that's writing I actually
07:36
really enjoy writing for the happiness
07:37
about.com
07:39
blog post or blog posts and I really
07:43
really get into that and it's something
07:44
I look forward to every week but you can
07:48
also have these activities with these
07:50
other people so if you love to go hiking
07:51
and you just can't find the time with
07:53
your with your schedule and you want
07:55
spend time with the family take the
07:57
family hiking and it may become a state
07:59
of flow for them as well but if you have
08:00
a group flow always make sure that you
08:02
have something set aside for you as an
08:05
individual flow whether it's writing in
08:07
your journal whether you'd like to
08:09
crochet or cross stitch I mean I don't
08:12
know make jam whatever it is something
08:15
that you enjoy doing set aside some time
08:18
to do that and really enter that state
08:20
of flow and I think the next question
08:23
becomes okay great I can set aside an
08:26
hour I can set aside a few hours a month
08:28
that's no big deal but how do I find my
08:30
volleyball or how do I find my hiking or
08:33
how do I find my riding my cross-stitch
08:35
my making jam whatever it is and I would
08:38
like to say that sometimes it just takes
08:40
some time to figure that out
08:43
right if you've always wanted to take a
08:45
kickboxing class
08:46
maybe it's kickboxing but you have to go
08:48
and you have to set aside the time to
08:50
then take the class and determine if
08:52
that is something you want to do so it's
08:54
gonna take a little bit of trial and
08:55
error sometimes you don't find flow
08:57
right away
08:58
but the important part is not to be
09:00
stuck up on getting it right or having
09:04
things done perfectly the first time out
09:06
and it can't be a matter of asking how
09:10
now hear me out here when you ask how do
09:14
I do something how how am I supposed to
09:16
get from A to B how am I supposed to
09:19
find my flow or what I want to use as my
09:22
flow activity you tend to want to put
09:25
all the pieces in place before you start
09:28
now I'm not saying asking how
09:29
is bad it's not it's good and it's human
09:32
nature to want to know how to proceed on
09:34
something we're very logical we like
09:36
steps 1 2 3 right we want them in order
09:39
we want to know how to do things but if
09:42
you get caught up on the how you won't
09:45
get into the activity so I would
09:50
recommend when you're done with this
09:51
podcast take an extra 15 minutes and
09:55
just create a list of things that you
09:58
like to do so I'm gonna just spit ball
10:02
here on things that I like to do so I
10:05
like to read and hopefully these will
10:08
provide some some ideas maybe they'll
10:09
resonate with a few of you maybe you'll
10:11
be like oh heck no that is not what I
10:13
like to do and you know what you don't
10:15
want to try doing flow with so I like to
10:18
read I actually really enjoy recording
10:21
this podcast as much as I said in the
10:22
first episode it was really tough and
10:25
hard to be vulnerable
10:25
I enjoy recording the podcast I really
10:29
like writing the blog like I said I like
10:32
to go hiking I'd like to work out
10:34
sometimes I can't get my button gear to
10:36
actually go into it again I really
10:39
really enjoy playing volleyball I enjoy
10:42
spending time with my friends and I
10:44
really enjoy long walks on the beach
10:48
with pina coladas no just kidding but I
10:50
really enjoy long walks where I can
10:53
listen to podcasts and I can get some
10:56
physical exercise and be outside and see
10:59
the beauty of the world around me now I
11:01
know that that's all super simple stuff
11:03
but that's the point is it doesn't have
11:05
to be some grandiose thing I'm not
11:07
saying go out and sign up for a
11:09
kickboxing class unless that's what you
11:11
think you want to try I mean that would
11:13
be freaking awesome if that's what you
11:15
find that you love to do and that's
11:17
where you find your flow but don't ask
11:18
ow just go in and do it and a lot of
11:21
these places have free classes so like
11:24
introductory classes so if you want to
11:26
go take a pic go take kickboxing go do a
11:29
free class if you want to try painting
11:31
sign up for one of those paint nights
11:33
and see if you like it and if you do you
11:35
can invest further and keep on going
11:37
towards that how but don't ask how to
11:40
start go through and just make this
11:43
quick list like I said take 15 minutes
11:46
max after the you listen to this podcast
11:49
hell you could even pause it if you
11:51
wanted to and come back later but write
11:54
down those things that you feel like you
11:57
really enjoy that you want to be better
11:58
at or that you totally find yourself
12:01
rapping around when you do it and then
12:05
start at the top of the list and see
12:07
what you can do and that doesn't mean
12:08
like like I said I have volleyball in
12:10
the summer that doesn't work for me as
12:14
it having a regular state of flow in the
12:16
winter so I'm gonna have to figure out
12:18
and go through this list as well as
12:20
we're heading into fall about what I
12:22
want to do to find a regular state of
12:24
flow where I can totally focus on what
12:26
I'm doing and be in the present and have
12:29
that positive present mindset and not
12:31
worry about the million other things on
12:33
my calendar or that the drama that could
12:36
be happening in the world around me so
12:41
one other thing to keep in mind that
12:43
I've managed mentioned volleyball and
12:44
writing and kickboxing classes and all
12:47
these things but there's I think a good
12:50
delineation between physical flow and
12:53
mental flow so you have your list
12:56
hopefully or you've pushed pause and
12:58
you've created it or when you create
12:59
your list when you're done listening
13:00
this podcast what I want you to do is
13:02
take that full list and then split it do
13:06
you see a large amount of them or more
13:09
physical related or are they more mental
13:12
related and try to even that list out so
13:15
try to think a little bit harder about
13:16
if for instance if you have a lot of
13:18
physical related things like in my case
13:20
walking hiking working out playing
13:23
volleyball versus I like to write and
13:27
record podcasts right so there's four to
13:29
three or two so I need to think of some
13:33
more mental stimulating things maybe
13:35
reading books and taking notes and
13:38
journaling and all of those type
13:40
meditation could even be it but make a
13:43
list and split it into two of those
13:45
mental flow and those physical flow and
13:47
then try alternating them because I have
13:49
found that there's a vast difference
13:51
between the two the volleyball physical
13:54
flow is really in vigor
13:57
and like I said I always feel fantastic
13:59
afterward sores all get-out but
14:01
fantastic afterward and really proud of
14:03
myself but when I am writing and
14:08
recording podcasts and journaling I find
14:12
myself mentally getting into a state
14:13
where I can focus on being more aware
14:16
and more of that presence of mind and I
14:19
find myself being much more open to the
14:23
universe and compassionate to those
14:25
around me after I do those activities so
14:28
split your list into physical and mental
14:31
flow activities and then just go down
14:33
the list and see what resonates with you
14:36
and set aside that that hour a month or
14:39
those few hours a month or it could be
14:41
five minutes a day right if you want to
14:43
try meditation or journaling five
14:45
minutes a day and again don't get caught
14:47
in the house I'm gonna use the example
14:48
of journaling so you're like okay yeah I
14:52
can I can journal in the morning that's
14:54
not a problem no big deal how what am I
14:57
gonna write about how am I gonna set
14:59
aside that time etc etc etc start
15:03
writing three things that you're
15:06
grateful for and I know that's really
15:09
overused in the happiness
15:10
self-development self-help space show
15:13
gratitude but it really makes a
15:15
difference and as you write those three
15:17
things maybe that's what it starts as
15:18
but you'll find that your day gets
15:20
better and you're in a mental state of
15:22
flow thinking and focusing solely on
15:24
what you're grateful for so don't get
15:27
caught in the how don't get caught in
15:28
the wind and what it is get caught up in
15:32
the state of flow and seeing how it
15:35
makes you feel so I'm gonna leave it at
15:38
that but I hope this podcast has
15:41
resonated with you and I would love to
15:43
hear what you do to find the state of
15:45
flow or what was on your list and what
15:48
you're looking forward to trying or if
15:50
you put some stuff on your list and you
15:51
win you did it and you're like oh I
15:53
hated that well now you know you don't
15:56
like whatever that activity was and you
15:57
can move on to the next thing on the
15:59
list and you can keep on growing and
16:00
trying the list and seeing how you can
16:03
find your state of flow so share your
16:05
list with me on Facebook or Instagram
16:08
you can find those links
